Festival of the Hunter Championships, June 1st 2013, Aston-le-Walls

Lovely weather at Aston le Walls for the Festival of the Hunter National Championships, and Sally and Tocka’s Treasure, Sally and Pride of Kashmir, Andy and Millthyme Sambucca and Catriona and Give me Grace were all ready and well organised for their Challenge 90 team final.  The show jumping caused plenty of problems with a choice of fences and a tight time – the cross country rode pretty well and the fearsome double of corners caused very little trouble.  Our four were not victorious – Andy and Sammy had a bit of a discussion at the jump just before the water, and George (Pride of Kashmir) took a little while to stop gazing around in wonder – Tocka’s Treasure lived up to her name and jumped a double clear – looked really happy with all fences – the odd time penalty but great jumping – and Grace went like a rocket – jumped splendidly double clear but a tad too fast………on a day when many failed to make the time!!  Catriona was 13th individually (hundreds in it) and she and Grace were also 2nd in the Working Hunter – and her In the Pink Veteran class was very strong but her 22 year old (not Grace but can’t remember his name – so sorry) was a very good 2nd.  So – a good day, and they looked extremely smart in Club colours – well done all!

Area 20 Combined Training Qualifier Report, May 4th, Llanymynech

All roads led to LLanymynech on Saturday 4th May 2013 for the British Riding Clubs Combined Training Qualifier – a newish competition involving teams of four; two Prelim tests with 75cms show jumping, and two Novice tests with 85 cms SJ.  Our two teams, Juliet Foden, Sally Vickers, Lucy Filby, Rebecca Bush and  Zoe Beresford, Rachel Large and Libby Richards and intrepid helper Sarah Irvine (hope Walter on top form again very soon) finished 4th and 7th respectively (15 teams competing) so respectable performances, with individual Dressage placings for Lucy Filby, Rebecca Bush, Rachel Large and Juliet Foden – and nearly all clear show jumping rounds.  East Clwyd ran a very pleasant competition – not at all pressured – you did your dressage, then got ready at your leisure for your SJ and made your way to the SJ – so never too  many warming up, and plenty of room anyway – big show jumping area on grass – caused quite a few problems though thankfully not for us!!   Ground firm but not impossible – Dressage judges smiley even when you forgot your test and missed out 2 dropping into (forward into should one say..) walks – so in all a pretty decent day out in the country!

Festival Of The Horse Area Trials, Smallwood, April 14th

Report from FOTH Chef D’Equipe, Libby Richards

Great day at Smallwood this Sunday – terrific wind – trickiest part of the course was getting past the marquee to the collecting ring area – many faults incurred here – but not by our intrepid teams, the Arrows (Sally Filby, Sally Vickers, Catriona Henderson and Andrew Stout), the Sabres (Libby Richards, Hannah Mulliner, Lucy Filby and Zoe Beresford) and the Blades (Sue O’Leary, Kim Treloar, Hannah Mulliner (different horse!!) and Jo Trelawney – who all show jumped and cross countries beautifully – loads of double clears, so all down to the dreaded optimum time – Catriona only missed an individual place by a whisker, and Sally F and Libby upheld the Flag for the Aged rather splendidly (despite Libby as Chef d’Equipe before the day walking the course three times and each time walking it incorrectly – fortunately the extra jump she and Holly were so pleased with was not cross flagged, so no elimination ensued….) – and the really important news – the Arrows were an excellent second and there is a good chance they should qualify for the national finals at Aston le Walls – we await news from Head Office. Many congrats to Sally and Sally and Andrew and Catriona. The Sabres were 6th. Thanks too to great helpers, Jane and Dawn and Karen and Sonya and Kathy and Rachel and Holly – they smiled from dawn to dusk – much appreciated.
It was a pleasure to be involved in this qualifier – thanks to all lovely team members – passports, medical armbands, hats and body protector checks and vaccination certificates all in order – instant response to all requests (they were all most reasonable of course…) and great riding on the day.

Final comment – Brook’s team form thing to fill in on the website is fantastic for chefs – thanks so much, Brook – please could any member interested in teams who has not yet completed the form do so when convenient – do back up your interest with a word with the relevant chefs, but for the entry and declaration forms it is life changing!!!!!
