After all the cancellations and postponements, it was great to have a competition to go to!

Five intrepid riders set off for deepest Wales, the weather was fine and the going was perfect.

The Novice Team consisted of Jean Spearing on Wynberry Bronze Blade, Libby Richards with Holly, Juliet Foden with Ozzie and Sharon Corke on Diamond Laser. They tried their best but were unplaced.

The Riding Test Team – Brook Butler (on Templebrook Boy) Libby, Juliet and Sharon  was 3^rd..

Juliet was 3^rd in her section and Brook won her section, she also rode as an individual in her qualifying Novice Test and was = 2^nd, hope that this is enough to get her to Lincoln, as she has also qualified with the show jumping team.

Despite relocation to Tushingham Arena (due to the weather), and last minute substitutions, we all arrived fit and raring to go showjumping!

The Style jumping team of Libby Richards, Hannah Leech, Brook Butler and Lucy Filby all went very well and took 2nd place, with Hannah also placed 4th individually.

The two novice teams also went well, both finished the first round on 4 faults. The second round was quite big and there were plenty of casualties throughout, but they all got round for 8 faults or less, and finished 4th and 5th. The star of our show was Nikki Phillips who jumped double clear and was 3rd individually – a great result!

The intermediate team – Brook Butler, Lucy Filby, Abi Unwin and Hannah Mulliner were fantastic! They won the competition outright without the need for a jump-off, and so they are heading for the National Championships at Lincoln in September. Hannah Mulliner jumped the only double clear over an enormous track to take the individual honours – well done Hannah and Sophie!

The weather was very kind and we enjoyed lovely sunshine all day. The rain only returned as we descended indoors for the presentation of awards!

WOW…..!! What a weekend, and what a performance!!

Saturday at Kelsall started with Jo Glover being the lone competitor for ECCTG, with other members of the Open team falling by the wayside as injuries took hold. Always one to rise to the occasion, Jo put in a cracking performance against a strong field and came 2nd, qualifying In Vogue for the Open Horse Trials Championship at Aston Le Walls. Many thanks to Andrea Ash who stepped in as Chef D’equipe on the day as I wasn’t able to be there.

Open Individual: 2nd – Jo Glover – In Vogue

After a night of non-stop heavy rain, we were all wondering whether Kelsall would run. True to form they carried on….. but it was the first time I have ever seen the ground at Kelsall look cut up! With the dressage arenas becoming very deep in places, all ECCTG competitors put in credible performances leaving our 2 Novice Teams and 1 Intermediate Team in strong positions. The show jumping track brought its usual share of problems with faults scattered around, although the majority of our team members jumped clear, thus enabling us to retain our strong position going into the XC phase.

The XC phase was executed by each and every ECCTG Novice team competitor achieving faultless performances…. the ECCTG Ladies are cross-country machines! There was no stopping them and whilst other clubs racked up cricket scores, these ladies just kept pushing through. At one time it looked likely we would get a 1st AND 2nd, but some inaccurate initial scoring moved one of our teams down from 2nd to 3rd – doh!! However, we held onto 1st place, resulting in yet more success for the club with ECCTG riders qualifiying for the championships.

Next, the Intermediate Team had a hard act to follow on the XC. Hannah Mulliner and Amy Lennon jumped round clear and fast, unfortunately obtaining penalties for being too quick. This seemed to be the order of the day for most Intermediate competitors, since many were penalised for being too quick – maybe the time hadn’t been altered following removal of a fence…..? Brook Butler was given an unfortunate 20 penalties for a step back at the drop (we were all holding our breath, hoping the jump judge would be kind!), and Lucy Filby had some problems at the beginning of the course. Sadly, both the stop and the time penalties proved expensive and the team slipped down the placings and missed qualifying, but still achieved a really creditable 5th place.

Well done to the ECCTG Endurance team and thank you to Jean Spearing for this write-up of their trip to Ulnes Walton.

Soli needed a new job. She had done dressage with me and eventing with Sarah and she had done her best for us. She was demoted to checking sheep and plodding round our lanes while more serious work was being put into young Tyler. While sheperding is a very noble occupation for a horse it does not stir the blood, except when you get the odd maverick sheep that needs rounding up.
I was considering what new job she could do when Pat Guerin suggested to me that I might like to do endurance with her. “What a good idea!” A 20 mile ride was selected for the first one of the season. The team consisted of chef d’equipe  Pat, Sue Williams, Jane Wyatt and myself. The Ulnes Walton Wander evoked thoughts of a gentle, relaxing saunter round the lanes of Lancashire. So I set out with the team for what I thought would be a scenic hack but maybe a little bit faster. Oh My Goodness! Pat and her in built speedometer set the pace. Sue and Jane close behind. Soli bringing up the rear, shocked at the relentless pace but determined to keep up. There were mainly tracks and fields with a little bit of road. Barefoot Soli utilised every grass verge, some with drainage ditches three meters deep at the side. Jane nearly vanished into one when Sara shied. It was very exciting. We were so fast, our ground crew Ken Wyatt and Sarah Spearing missed the first two checkpoints. They caught up with us at the third and the horses had beet pulp flavoured water . Plus water for us. Then off we set again and nearly took a wrong turn when a parked car was partially  covering one of the orange arrows. At the end, heart rates and soundness are checked again and to our delight we all passed the vet. After we had settled the horses down ready for the journey home we had much needed sustenance ourselves. We had all completed with a grade one and averaged 11.5 miles per hour and have qualified to ride at Builth Wells in the autumn. Amazing! Can’t wait for the next ride.
